300: Honour, Duty and the Glory of War

Wow. What a Neocon wet dream this movie is. I can almost imagine all those dried up old conservatives getting little boners when they hear the speeches about honour and duty and the glories of war. Freedom requires the payment of blood, this movie tells us -- a claim I heard made by a Marine, incidentally, in an old Gwyn Dyer documentary, Road to Total War. It sounded as ridiculous to me then as it does in this movie. Hell, the queen's speech to the senate is a thinly veiled endorsement of Bush's 'surge' and her detractors were, of course, portrayed as traitors (not to mention rapists). The fact of the matter is that real modern warfare is, indeed, blood filled. However, there is rarely any honour, duty and glory to accompany it. Take, for instance, a segment from this week's episode of 60 Minutes in which Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich speaks publicly about the Haditha massacre for the first time. Following an IED attack which killed one of his soldiers, the platoon under his command proceeded to gun down five unarmed men in the back who happened to be in the area fleeing the area (wouldn't you be fleeing the area?), then threw grenades into two family dwellings and shot any survivors. How honourable. How dutiful. How glorious is war.
